About Ruth

Ruth Everson has extensive experience in education, having taught English for 39 years. She was the Head of Department, English, at Springs Girls’ High School before moving to St Stithians Girls’ College, where she taught English and was the Leadership Director.

 

Ruth uses her love of writing in many ways. She authored the study guide for The Theory of Flight by Siphiwe Gloria Ndlovu and has compiled various study guides, including  Home Language and First Additional Language Matric (DBE) poetry. Her most recent work is this guide for Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, a 2025 Matric setwork.

 

Ruth has written a regular newspaper column, magazine pieces and educational TV scripts. She was the winner of the 2010 Woman and Home short story competition and has twice been long listed for the Sol Plaatje European Union poetry award. She has five poems and a play in the Penguin Random House anthology, Apocalypse at the End of the Street publishedin 2024. Two poems will be published in UK anthologies in 2025.

 

Ruth’s poems have been used in professional stage performances, numerous textbooks and in national examinations. She worked for the Grahamstown Foundation (1998 -2008) at the National Schools’ Arts Festival as well as at most of their regional Arts Festivals. Poetry and speaking have taken her all over South Africa as well as to Swaziland, Botswana, Egypt, China and twice to the Netherlands. She has two anthologies,  Landscapes of Courage and  No Fire on the Moon. Ruth has poems in local and international publications.

 

Over the years, Ruth has worn many hats. She is a facilitator of various leadership and personal mastery programmes. She is a certified Life Coach qualifying in 2005 and then adding Logotherapy through the Viktor Frankl Institute and is also a Martha Beck Wayfinder coach. Ruth works locally and internationally with clients across Europe, the United Kingdom and Australia. Coaching combines her passion for personal mastery and poetry.
